Ruffled Shawl

Description:  This shawl has ruffled garter-stitch edge.  Short rows are worked to form concentric half circles.

Level: Easy/Intermediate (short rows)

Size:  Small/Medium size (shown): ~14" x 42" (Large: 18" x 56")

Materials: 

 Gauge:  4 sts=1 inch in St st on circular needles

 

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CO- cast on; K- Knit; P- Purl; PM- place marker;
rep- repeat; St st- stockinette stitch; st(s)- stitch(es); WT- see below

 

The ruffle and shawl are both worked with short rows (WT).

 

WT: On knit side, K to designated st, slip next st to right needle, bring yarn to front, sl st back to left needle, turn and bring yarn to front as to purl or leave in back if next st is knit.  On purl side, P to designated st, slip next st to right needle, take yarn to back, sl st back to left needle, turn and put yarn to back as to knit.

 

* The sample shawl, shown in the smaller size, used EXACTLY four balls.  You may wish to get extra ball for either size to allow for any variation in knitting.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Ruffle: Using size 10 needles, cast on 15 sts. Knit one row.

Row 1:  Knit 10, WT.

Row 2:  Knit

Row 3: Knit 5, WT.

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: Knit 15

Row 6: Knit

 

Rep rows 1-6 until 180 (240) ridges have been formed at the narrow edge of ruffle. End by working row 6. BO. Do not cut yarn. Turn work and using size 9 needle, PU and K 1 st in each garter ridge across top of ruffle: 180 (240 sts).

 

K 3 rows (wrong, right, wrong side) - this makes 2 garter ridges on the right side, above the ruffle.

PM at center: 90 (120) sts each side of marker.

 

Cont as follows:

Row 1: Knit to within 3 sts of end, WT

Row 2: Purl to within 3 sts of end, WT

Row 3: Knit to within 3 sts of gap, WT

Row 4: Purl to within 3 sts of gap, WT

Row 5: Repeat row 3

Row 6: Repeat row 4

Row 7: K to within 20 sts of center marker, (ssk, K2) 5 times, slip marker, (K2, K2 tog) 5 times,

 

K to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous row, WT.

 

Row 8:  K to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous row, WT.

Row 9-16:  Rep rows 1-8 once more for small/medium size; rep 3 times more for large size.

Row 17:  K to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous row, WT.

Row 18:  P to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous K row, WT.

Row 19:  K to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous P row, WT.

Row 20:  P to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous K row, WT.

Row 21:  Rep row 3.

Row 22:  Rep row 4.

Row 23:  K to within 16 sts of center marker, (ssk, K2) 4 times, slip marker, (K2, K2 tog) 4 times, K to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous row, WT.

Row 24:  K to within 3 sts of gap created by turn of previous row, WT.

 

Rep rows 17-24 four times more for small/medium size, six times more for large size.


Top Border:

Row 1:   Turn and K across sts on left side of shawl to end of row, working wrap and stitch on the needle together, pick up and knit one st in ea st across edge of ruffle.

Row 2:   Turn and K across sts to end of row, once again working wrap and st together and picking up 1 st in each st at edge of ruffle.

 

Knit 3 more rows. BO loosely on the right side using tip of size 10 needle.
