Diagonal Blocks Crocheted Scarf

Description:  This scarf is soft and light. The color changes are all in the yarn. A rainbow of color to wear around your neck.

Level: Intermediate

Size:  5" x 62"

Materials: 

Abbreviations:  ch- chain; dc- double crochet; hdc- half double crochet; sl st- slip stitch; sp- space

 

Beginning Block: Ch 6 loosely, turn. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch.

 

Block: Sl st into ch-3 space of next block, ch 3, 3 dc in same space.

 

Decreasing Block: Ch 1, turn. Sl st across top of block just completed, sl st into ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, join with sl st into ch-3 space of next block.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Make beginning block. Ch 6 and make a second beginning block, flip first block up to sl st under ch-3 of first beginning block; ch 3, 3 dc in same space. This row now has 2 blocks. (To flip block up, tip left hand forward, place thumb under block, index finger on top, tip hand back and turn the block up so that the ch 3 is in position to be joined with sl st.)

 

Work beginning block, flip work up, sl st into ch-3 space of previous row, ch 3, 3 dc in same space. Sl st into space under ch-3 space of next block, ch 3, make block as before.

 

Continue in this manner, increasing one block on each row to 7 blocks along both straight sides and on the diagonal.

 

Next row: Work decreasing block, make blocks to end (7 blocks made).

Next row: Work increasing block, make blocks to end (7 blocks made)

 

Continue in this manner until 45 blocks have been made on the long side of the scarf.

Continue as est, but work decreasing block at beginning of each row to square off the end.

 

Make a second piece in the same manner,. Do not fasten off.

 

Join at center back as follows: Place right sides together (the stripe colors will probably not match - this is the nature of the yarn). Sl st thru st at edge of each piece, joining them together. *Ch 3, sl st in space between next 2 blocks* joining both halves of scarf. Do not fasten off.

 

Edging: Ch 2, hdc into space between next 2 blocks, ch 3, *3 dc into space under hdc just made, hdc into space between next 2 blocks.* Repeat between * all around. Last Point: Ch 3 and work 2 dc in space under hdc, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3. Fasten off.
