INSTRUCTIONS

Using smaller needle and Mini Solid, cast on 150 sts.  Join, taking care not to twist stitches. Work in K1-P1 ribbing for 1.25”.  Purl one round.  Knit another 1.25” in K1-P1 ribbing.

Change to larger needle and knit one round even.

Increase round:  *K4, inc in next st.*  Repeat between * around – 180 sts.

Change to Mini Mochi and begin pattern:

*K2, yo, K2, K2 tog.* all around.

Repeat this pattern round, changing color every 4 rounds, until piece measures 4.5” from purl round in center of ribbing.   Place a string or pin on first marker, designating it as the beginning of the rounds.  Begin decreasing to shape top of hat as follows:

Note:Continue to change colors every 4 rounds, and change to double point needles when stitches are tight on the circular needle.

Round 1:  *Work pattern across 30 sts, K4, K2 tog, place marker.*  Repeat between * four times more.  There are now 5 sections of 35 sts each.

Round 2:  *Work pattern to last 5 sts before marker,  K3, K2 tog.*  Repeat between * around.

Round 3:  *Work pattern to last 4 sts before marker, K2, K2 tog.*

Round 4:  *Work pattern to last 3 sts before marker, k1, K2 tog.*

Round 5:  *Work pattern to last 8 sts before marker, K4, (K2 tog twice).*

Round 6:  *Work pattern to last 6 sts before marker, K4, K2 tog.*

Repeat Rounds 2-6, changing color every four rounds until 4 sts remain between markers.  Continue decreasing, but do not change colors from this point forward.  When 2 sts remain between markers,  cut yarn and draw through remaining loops.  Pull up firmly and fasten off.

Fold ribbing to inside of hat on purl round and slip stitch in place for a double band.
