Mini Mochi

Mitered Eyelet Shawl

Originally designed by Gail Tanquary in Mochi Plus. 
Mini Mochi version knit by Angie Kachelmeier

Description:  This shawlette features mitered diamonds with eyelet accents.  Stitches are picked up as you work subsequent motifs.  The slow-striping quality of Mini Mochi looks amazing in this pattern.  See the larger version in Mochi Plus here.

 

Please Note:  Mini Mochi has long bands of color, so pay attention to color when adding motifs.  If it looks like the next motif will be mostly the same color as the previous, start in another position on the row to insure even color distribution.

 

Level: Easy / Intermediate

Size:  44" wide x 20" high (29" along one side)

Materials: 

  • 3 balls Crystal Palace Mini Mochi (shown in 339 "Sand Painting")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 9" single-pointed needles and/or 35" circular needle in US size 5 (or size needed for gauge)
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  6 sts=1" in St st (Each motif measures ~4.5" wide by 5" high when blocked)

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CO- cast on; k- knit; k2 tog/p2 tog- knit/purl 2 stitches together; kfb- knit in the front and back loop to increase one stitch; p- purl; psso- pass the slipped stitch over; RS- right side (outside of garment); sk2p- slip 1, K2 tog, psso; sl- slip as if to purl, unless otherwise noted; ssk- slip, slip, knit (slip two stitches one at a time knitwise, knit the two stitches together); st(s)- stitches; WS- wrong side (inside of garment); yo- yarn over

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Beginning mitered square: 

Using size 9 single-pointed needles, CO 39 sts.

Row 1 (WS):  Knit

Row 2:  K18, sk2p, K18

Row 3:  P37

Row 4:  K2, (yo, ssk) 7 times, K1, sk2p, K1, (K2 tog, yo) 7 times, K2.

Row 5:  P35.

Row 6:  K16, sk2p, K16.

Row 7:  K33.

Row 8:  K15, sk2p, K15.

Row 9:  P31.

Row 10:  K2, (yo, ssk) 6 times, sk2p, (K2 tog, yo) 6 times, K2.

Row 11:  P29.

Row 12:  K13, sk2p, K13.

Row 13:  K27.

Row 14:  K12, sk2p, K12.

Row 15:  P25.

Row 16:  K2, (yo, ssk) 4 times, K1, sk2p, K1, (K2 tog, yo) 4 times, K2.

Row 17:  P23.

Row 18:  K10, sk2p, K10.

Row 19:  K21.

Row 20:  K9, sk2p, K9.

Row 21:  P19.

Row 22:  K2, (yo, ssk) 3 times, sk2p, (K2tog, yo) 3 times, K2.

Row 23:  P17.

Row 24:  K7, sk2p, K7.

Row 25:  K15.

Row 26:  K6, sk2p, K6.

Row 27:  P13.

Row 28:  K5, sk2p, K5.

Row 29:  K11.

Row 30:  K4, sk2p, 4.

Row 31:  P9.

Row 32:  K3, sk2p, K3.

Row 33:  P7.

Row 34:  K2, sk2p, K2.

Row 35:  P5.

Row 36:  K1, sk2p, K1.

Row 37:  Sl 1, p2 tog, psso.   One st remains.  Fasten off by cutting yarn with 8" tail and drawing through last stitch.

 

This completes the basic mitered square.  This first square will be the bottom center square of the shawl.  
Follow the square directions and schematic drawing below for square placement and quantity of the remaining squares. 

 

Right edge squares:  CO 20 sts, pick up and knit 19 sts along right edge of mitered square (39 sts).  Complete as for beginning square. 

 

Left edge squares:  Pick up and knit 19 sts along left side of mitered square.  Using cable cast-on, CO 20 sts loosely (39 sts).   Complete as for beginning square.

 

Inside (center) squares:  With RS facing, pick up and knit 19 sts along right edge of square, pick up 1 st in top of square in row below, pick up and knit 19 sts along left edge (39 sts).  Complete as for beginning square.

 

Top Border Triangles:

Pick up and/or CO sts for triangles at top of shawl in the same manner as full squares.  Continue as follows: 

Row 1 (WS):  K39

Row 2:  Ssk, K16, sk2p, K16, K2 tog.

Row 3:  P35

Row 4:  Ssk, K1, (yo, ssk) 6 times, K1, sk2p, K1, (K2 tog, yo) 6 times, K1, K2 tog.

Row 5:  P31

Row 6:  Ssk, K12, sk2p, K12, K2 tog.

Row 7:  K27

Row 8:  Ssk, K10, sk2p, K10, K2 tog.

Row 9:  P23

Row 10:  Ssk, K1, (yo, ssk) 3 times, K1, sk2p, K1, (K2 tog, yo) 3 times, K1, K2 tog.

Row 11:  P19

Row 12:  Ssk, K6, sk2p, K6, K2 tog.

Row 13:  K15

Row 14:  Ssk, K4, sk2p, K4, K2 tog.

Row 15:  P11.

Row 16:  Ssk, K2, sk2p, K2, K2 tog.

Row 17:  K7.

Row 18:  Ssk, sk2p, K2 tog.

Row 19:  Sl 1, P2 tog, psso.   Fasten off.

 

Borders:  

For bottom border:  With RS facing and using 55" circular needle, pick up and knit one st in each cast-on stitch along one side of shawl, place marker, pick up and knit one st in tip of bottom center square, place marker, pick up and knit one st in each cast-on stitch along other side of shawl. Turn and K to one st before marker, Kfb in next st (to increase one st), sl marker, K1, sl marker, Kfb in next st (to increase one st), K to end.   Turn and knit one row.  Repeat these 2 rows 3 times more (4 garter ridges on right side).   BO loosely. (You can use a size 10 needle for binding off to achieve a looser finish.)

 

For top border:  With RS facing, pick up and knit one st in the end of each garter ridge at the top of the shawl, pick up and knit 32 sts across the top of each top triangle.  Turn and knit 7 rows, creating 4 ridges on RS.   BO loosely.  (You can use a size 10 needle for binding off to achieve a looser finish.)

 

 

Weave in ends.  Block to measurements.
